Quotes from the families

The chair will make a huge difference to Harry’s independence. His biggest love is his sausage dog ‘Poppy’ and now with his powered wheelchair he will be able to take her out for a walk without assistance.

Father Chris, 2017

We are so excited as this will make a huge difference to Georgia and ourselves. Georgia’s current chair is very heavy… and I’m only 5ft 2 so this will be amazing. I also suffer with fibromyalgia so really struggle. Once again massive thank you!

Tracey, Paul, Dan & Georgia x – 2017

A power chair makes a real difference to our family as it gives Summer some much needed independence. It also makes it much easier for us to go out as a family and… I start to struggle after a little while pushing and keeping an eye on my youngest too.

Mother Sam, 2017

A powered wheelchair gives me the ability to go out with my friends and not be dependent on people pushing me, it means I have more independence in every aspect of life and therefore improves it as a whole.

Louis, 2017

It will make a great difference to my life because it will make everyday tasks easier, and where the wheelchair can rise it will help with my anxiety so I can be at the same level as other people instead of others looking down on me or completely ignoring me.

Jade, 2017

Our Charity

On the 30th November 1974 the late George Makey M.B.E. penned the first of his ‘famous’ letters concerning his idea of raising funds to provide PWCs (powered wheelchairs) for disadvantaged youngsters.

The purpose was to ask professional golfers and showbiz celebrities mainly in the south of England, to become members, so that money could be raised which would pay for two powered chairs at £300 each. (The cost for a chair in 2016 now averages £3,000.) The ‘PWC crusade’ as George called it, launched successfully in 1975 and has blossomed since under different names depending on the sponsor. It ultimately became the Peter Alliss Masters in 1988; some may well recall it being known as ‘Golfers Anonymous’ but more so as ‘The Marley Wheelchair Classic’.

Lee Trevino and Fuzzy Zoeller were the first ‘high profile’ professional golfers to donate PWCs and set a precedent, following that Open Champions over the years have personally donated more than 30 powered wheelchairs to ‘the crusade’, Seve Ballesteros alone donated 17!

Over the last 40 years, the generosity of golf clubs and societies throughout the UK and Ireland has enabled the £7 million mark to be reached.

Last year (2017) we raised £150,000 and presented 50 chairs.
